What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

A dental cleaning is designed to remove plaque and tartar, check your gum health, and help prevent small problems from becoming bigger ones. Even with great brushing and flossing, tartar can build up in areas that are difficult to reach at home.
During your visit, the hygienist or dental team evaluates your teeth and gums. We may measure gum pockets, check for bleeding, review any areas that are sensitive, and look for changes around old fillings, crowns, implants, or other dental work.
The cleaning itself usually includes removing tartar with hand instruments and/or an ultrasonic scaler, polishing the teeth, flossing, and reviewing home-care tips. If gum inflammation or deeper pockets are present, you may need a different type of periodontal cleaning rather than a standard preventive cleaning.
The doctor exam is also important. It gives us a chance to screen for cavities, cracked teeth, bite issues, oral lesions, failing restorations, and other concerns. Regular cleanings are not just about making teeth feel smooth — they are part of a prevention system that helps protect your long-term dental health.
When should you ask a dentist?
If you notice symptoms, have a change in your bite, or are unsure whether something is normal, a dental exam is the safest way to get a clear answer. Early evaluation often gives you more conservative options.
